Blogs can be used for many educational purposes. In researching different types of blogs used by teachers, I noticed that most blogs are used for educators to collaborate and bounce ideas off of each other. Teacher's can collaborate and share ideas of what has and has not worked in their own class room. The great thing about blogs is that they are updated as often as you would like it to be. A teacher can also upload their syllabus, or classroom rules on a blog that can be accessed by their students. You can also provide links for handouts given in class, homework, or any announcements you would like to share with your students. A class blog can also be a great way to communicate with parents. They would be kept in the loop of what is going on in the class, homework assignments, and test and quiz dates.
For students who have a hard time expressing themselves vocally, blogs are a great way for them to communicate with the teacher or other classmates. As long as it is kept professional, blogs can begin rich discussions about any topic. Students can share their knowledge and learning experiences with other students and the teacher on a blog. They can reflect on what they learned in class and ask questions they might be afraid to ask in class.
If I were to use a blog in my math class, I would use it as a place to post my test and quiz dates and also the homework. I would put worked out solutions that I am not able to get to in class. Students would be encouraged to ask questions on the blog and if I am not available to answer it, I would hope that another student would help out. I might even post a homework question on the blog where they would have to write and explain how to do a math problem or reflect on what they learned in class.
